Grandma's Pound Cake
(1850 Recipe)
2 Cups Sugar (one pound)
2 Cups Butter (one pound)
4 Cups flour (one pound)
10 Eggs, separated (one pound)
Beat egg yolks and egg whites separately. Cream butter
and sugar
together. Add beaten egg yolks and mix well. Add flour
and beaten
egg whites alternately to mix. Beat well. Put low heat
to oven and
gradually increase heat to moderate. (Put cake on large
tube pan,
place in cold oven and heat to 325º degrees.) Bake
2 hours or
until straw (toothpick) inserted comes out clean. NOTE:
Recipe can be
halved. Vanilla extract may also be added (one Tablespoon).
